Le Quartier des spectacles est une des composantes de la nouvelle image de marque de Montréal axée sur la culture et la mise en valeur de son activité créatrice. Il s’agit de la plus récente phase de son développement économique. Je m’intéresse en particulier à l’opinion des gens concernant l’impact socioéconomique et environnemental de ces changements.
The Quartier des spectacles is part of Montréal’s re-branding through culture as a “creative city.” This is the most recent of many phases of economic development in the city’s history. I am interested in public opinion on the impact (socioeconomic and environmental) of these changes.
À partir de la méthode de travail développée dans le projet Propagande picturale, je choisirai des sites « pittoresques » où l’écart entre la commercialisation de la culture et le développement d’une culture émergente ainsi que la disparité de revenu et de statut social tel que discuté dans la théorie de la « classe créatrice » se manifestent. Adoptant le rôle d’une peintre paysagiste, je m’installerai avec mon chevalet dans certains de ces sites pour y reproduire des vues de Montréal peintes originellement par madame Elizabeth Simcoe (1762-1850), épouse du premier lieutenant-gouverneur du Haut-Canada. Les gens interpellés par ces représentations de l’époque préindustrielle, pourront échanger leurs points de vue avec moi et même prendre possession de mes tableaux en faisant un troc.
As part of the ongoing Pictorial Propaganda project, locations in the Quartier will be identified as “Picturesque.” Many of these site will exemplify the duality between commercial and emergent culture, as well as the polarized income and social status inherent to the theory of the “creative class” and the knowledge economy. In some of these locations, I will assume the role of a landscape painter and will copy views of Montréal originally painted in 1792 by Mrs. Elizabeth Simcoe (wife of the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada). As people pass by me on their daily trajectory, they will stop and share their thoughts with me in response to this imagery of a pre-industrial era. If they choose, they may also negotiate a trade to take possession of my reproductions.
